Physical health monitoring

How is physical health monitoring related to schizophrenia?

People with illnesses such as schizophrenia may be at increased risk for a number of physical conditions, for a number of reasons. Many treatments for schizophrenia, such as antipsychotics, can be associated with adverse side effects including weight gain. Furthermore, people with schizophrenia may also be hesitant to seek further advice from a GP. A program of well organised and regular physical health monitoring may be beneficial to people with schizophrenia.

What is the evidence regarding physical health monitoring?

Moderate quality evidence suggests people with a severe mental disorder are prescribed medication for physical disorders less often than people without a severe mental disorder. There is greater uptake of ill-health prevention services by people with schizophrenia after being given general health advice.
