What is prevalence of schizophrenia in elderly people?

Prevalence represents the overall proportion of individuals in a population who have the disorder of interest. It is different from incidence, which represents only the new cases that have developed over a particular time-period. Point prevalence is the proportion of individuals in a population who have the disorder at a given point in time, while period prevalence is the proportion of individuals in a population who have the disorder over specific time periods. Lifetime prevalence is the proportion of individuals in a population who have ever had the disorder and lifetime morbid risk also includes those who had the disorder but were deceased at the time of the survey.

What is the prevalence of schizophrenia in elderly people?

Moderate to high quality evidence finds the overall prevalence of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders in older prisoners (>50 years) is around 5.5%. Moderate quality evidence suggests the prevalence of schizophrenia in elderly men who attempted suicide is also around 5%, which is substantially lower than the prevalence of mood disorders (42%) or substance use disorders (41%) in this population.

It is distinct from incidence, which refers to how many new cases there are per population in a specified time period.

What is the evidence for the prevalence of schizophrenia in forensic settings?

Moderate to high quality evidence suggests the overall prevalence of any psychotic disorder in prisoners is around 3.6%. There were higher prevalence rates in low- to middle-income countries (5.5-6.2%) than in high-income countries (3.5%). The rate of any non-affective psychotic disorder was 15.8 times higher in prisoners in low and middle-income countries than in the general population.

Moderate to high quality evidence finds the prevalence of schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders in older prisoners (> 50 years) is around 5.5%, from studies conducted in the USA, UK, and France.

Among adolescents in juvenile forensic settings, moderate to high quality evidence finds the prevalence rate of any psychotic disorder is 2.7% for males and 2.9% for females.

Among offenders on probation, moderate to low quality evidence finds the prevalence of schizophrenia ranges between 1.7% and 30%.

What is the evidence for the prevalence of schizophrenia in homeless populations?

Moderate quality evidence suggests the overall prevalence rate of any psychotic disorder in homeless people is around 21%. Moderate to high quality evidence suggests the prevalence of schizophrenia spectrum disorders is around 12.4% in homeless populations in high-income countries. The prevalence rate of schizophrenia is higher in developing countries (22%).

Moderate quality evidence shows rates of schizophrenia in homeless populations varied across US cities, with rates higher in Los Angeles than in New York, which had higher rates than Philadelphia. Rates were generally higher in younger than older age-groups, higher in chronically homeless people, and higher in women than in men.

It is distinct from incidence, which refers to how many new cases there are per population in a specified time period. Lifetime prevalence is the number of individuals in a population that at some point in their life have experienced schizophrenia compared to the total number of individuals.

What is the evidence regarding sex differences in prevalence rates of schizophrenia?

Moderate quality evidence found no differences in the overall prevalence of schizophrenia between males and females. There were also similar prevalence rates of any psychotic disorder in male and female adolescents in juvenile detention (2.7% vs. 2.9%). There were similar prevalence rates of schizophrenia in homeless males and females in St Louis and Madrid. However, there were higher prevalence rates of schizophrenia in homeless women than in homeless men in Melbourne, Munich, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

Please also see the topic on differences in incidence rates of schizophrenia between males and females.
