In general, people with bipolar disorder can have increased rates of co-occurring conditions. These may include disorders of the respiratory system, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

What is the evidence for comorbid respiratory disease?

Moderate to high quality evidence suggests people with bipolar disorder have increased rates of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease compared to people without bipolar disorder. Review authors state this association may be explained by increased rates of smoking.
